Modern cave rafting follows these same waterways, though the experience is far removed from the solemn rituals that once echoed through the chambers. Most cave rafting in Belize centers on the Caves Branch River system, where underground stretches alternate with open jungle canopy. You'll spend 30 to 90 minutes floating through darkness, headlamp beams catching stalactites and the occasional bat colony, before emerging into daylight and paddling downstream. Water levels fluctuate sharply between dry season (February through May) and wet season (June through November), altering both the difficulty and the amount of time spent portaging around shallow sections. Tour operators adjust routes accordingly, sometimes switching to tubing when water is low or opting for higher sections when the river runs fast. The Sibun River offers a different profile—longer stretches of open water, fewer true cave passages, but more consistent flow year-round. It's less visited than Caves Branch, which makes it a quieter alternative when cruise schedules clog the more famous sites. Both rivers require moderate fitness; you'll be in the water for two to four hours depending on the route, and you'll need to navigate slippery limestone ledges during entry and exit points. Guides handle the route-finding and provide all rafting or tubing gear, but participants should be comfortable in moving water and prepared for total darkness in stretches where cave ceilings drop low. Booking directly with an outfitter in San Ignacio or Belmopan typically costs less than booking through Belize City hotels, though transport from the city adds 90 minutes each way. Tours include the conservation fee, safety equipment, and lunch, but tipping guides—around 15 percent—is standard practice. The Maya who once navigated these rivers by torchlight left pottery shards and ceremonial altars deep inside; modern regulations prohibit touching or removing anything, and most tour groups now carry trash bags to pack out any debris left by previous visitors.
